Before her recent move to sunny California, Dr. Misra held the positions of General Surgeon, and was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at McMaster University. She was Co-Director of the Bariatric Surgery program, Associate Director for Center of Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS) and CTU Director for Senior Medical Students at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton, ON, Canada. She was the Director and Co-Founder of the Canadian Institute of Bariatric Options (CIBO). This is one of the first Canadian comprehensive multidisciplinary outpatient weight loss programs that involves surgical, medical, psychological, nutritional, and fitness programs. Dr. Misra has an impressive educational background that includes completion of the Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgical Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA, USA in 2005. Since completion of her training, she has performed thousands of advanced laparoscopic, bariatric, and endoscopic procedures. She is Board Certified to practice General Surgery in both Canada and the USA.

About Dr. Monali Misra

Dr. Mona Misra is a highly experienced and skilled bariatric surgeon, recently moving from Canada to Los Angeles. Since completing her training, she has performed thousands of advanced laparoscopic, bariatric, and endoscopic procedures. Dr. Misra has presented research findings at numerous national and international meetings on advanced laparoscopic techniques and metabolic surgery. She is also on staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and is part of the prestigious Bariatric Center of Excellence.

Dr. Misra has published numerous academic articles in several peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience and The Cancer Journal, a publication of the National Cancer Institute. In 2005, her work titled “Device Related Reoperations After Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band Placement” was accepted for presentation at the American College of Surgeons Conference in Santa Barbara, California.

Dr. Misra is recognized for her expertise in bariatric procedures throughout both the United States and Canada. She is asked to participate in numerous speaking engagements, including as an expert guest lecturer on the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System for the Advanced Laparoscopic Fellowship Program in 2010.

Since completing her Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgical Fellowship in 2005, Dr. Mona Misra has successfully performed thousands of advanced laparoscopic, bariatric, and endoscopic procedures. Dr Mona Misra is involved in numerous on-going studies and is a Principal Investigator for a Study Comparing Preoperative Management of Oral Intake Prior to Laparoscopic Procedures vs. Traditional Methods, as well as A Prospective Randomized Controlled Pilot Study of Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery for Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in Obese Patients with End Organ Damage.

Dr. Misra is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She is also currently a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and Canadian Medical Protective Association.

Dr. Misra was honored with the Outstanding Preceptor Award in Surgery two years in a row by the Undergraduate MD Program. Additionally, she was recognized for the ‘Most Distinguished Poster Presentation’ awarded at S.A.G.E.S. (Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) in 2004 and earned the Certificate of Merit Award from the Canadian Association of Medical Educators in 2007.
